Airbagid

Airbagid is a proposed identifier associated with automotive airbag systems, intended to uniquely identify an individual airbag module and its deployment-related data across a vehicle’s safety electronics. The concept envisions a non-volatile data record stored in the airbag module or its controller, containing fields such as manufacturer, part number, serial number, production date, batch or lot, firmware version, calibration data, deployment history, and a vehicle- or module-specific linkage such as a VIN. The airbagid would be readable by diagnostic tools, maintenance databases, or crash investigators to precisely identify the exact airbag and its history.

Benefits cited for airbagid include improved traceability, more efficient recalls, better replacement part matching, and enhanced post-crash analysis. It could simplify maintenance records by linking a specific airbag to its vehicle and deployment history, potentially reducing the risk of mismatched components and improving safety outcomes during service or recalls.

Security and privacy considerations are central to debates about airbagid. Access controls, tamper resistance, and data encryption would be needed to prevent unauthorized reading or manipulation of deployment histories. Privacy safeguards and audit trails would be necessary to limit data exposure and misuse, particularly when data is transmitted to external systems.

Status and outlook: as of now, airbagid is not a widely adopted standard. Existing practices rely on part numbers, serial numbers, the VIN, and regional recall databases.
