Agastache

Agastache, commonly known as giant hyssop or hummingbird mint, is a genus of aromatic perennial flowering plants in the mint family (Lamiaceae). Native to North America, the genus comprises approximately 25 species, primarily found in the western and central regions of the continent. These plants are valued for their attractive foliage, vibrant flower spikes, and long bloom periods, making them popular choices for both ornamental gardening and culinary uses.

Agastache plants typically feature square stems, opposite leaves, and whorls of tubular flowers that bloom from late spring to early fall. The flowers are often produced in dense, upright spikes and come in a variety of colors, including purple, blue, pink, white, and yellow. The foliage is generally lance-shaped, serrated, and aromatic when crushed, releasing a scent reminiscent of anise, citrus, or mint, depending on the species.

Many Agastache species are drought-tolerant and thrive in full sun, making them well-suited for xeriscaping and low-maintenance gardens. They are also known to attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, contributing to garden biodiversity. Some popular cultivars include *Agastache foeniculum* (giant hyssop), *Agastache rupestris* (Texas giant hyssop), and *Agastache scrophulariifolia* (blue giant hyssop).

Beyond their ornamental value, Agastache plants have culinary and medicinal applications. Historically, some Native American tribes utilized Agastache for medicinal purposes, including treating respiratory ailments and digestive issues.

Agastache is generally easy to grow from seed or cuttings and can be propagated by division in early spring. These plants are relatively pest-resistant but may be susceptible to powdery mildew in humid conditions. With proper care, including well-drained soil and occasional pruning, Agastache can thrive for several years, providing long-lasting beauty and utility in the garden.
