Againstdeterminants is a philosophical concept that challenges the notion of strict determinism. Determinism, in its simplest form, posits that all events, including human actions, are causally necessitated by antecedent events and conditions together with the laws of nature. Againstdeterminants, conversely, suggests that there are instances where events are not entirely predetermined. This can manifest in various ways, such as the possibility of genuine free will, the existence of randomness or indeterminacy at a fundamental level of reality, or the idea that certain outcomes are not uniquely fixed by prior states.

Proponents of againstdeterminants often point to quantum mechanics as evidence for inherent indeterminacy in the universe, suggesting that at the subatomic level, events are not predictable with certainty. Others argue from a metaphysical or ethical standpoint, asserting that concepts like moral responsibility, creativity, and personal choice would be meaningless or impossible in a strictly deterministic world. The idea is not necessarily to propose a complete absence of causality, but rather to carve out space for possibility, contingency, or agent causation that escapes the iron grip of deterministic necessity. This position acknowledges the influence of past events and natural laws but maintains that these factors do not wholly dictate future outcomes, leaving room for alternative possibilities or the active agency of conscious beings.
