Aethionema

Aethionema is a genus in the mustard family (Brassicaceae), commonly known as stonecresses. It includes roughly 20–25 species of evergreen perennials and small shrubs native to temperate regions of southern Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia.

Plants are low-growing, forming mats or compact clumps with slender stems and small, often bluish-green leaves. In spring they bear numerous small flowers on slender flowering stems; each flower has four petals, typical of Brassicaceae, and colors range from pink, purple, and red to white and blue in some species.

Habitats include rocky hillsides, screes, and crevices; they are adapted to lean, well-drained soils and dry summers. They prefer full sun and are drought-tolerant once established. Most species are evergreen and retain their foliage through winter in milder climates.

Cultivation is common in rock gardens, alpine gardens, borders, and containers. Propagation is by seed or semi-ripe cuttings; provide well-drained soil and a sunny position. Avoid overwatering and heavy, poorly drained soils, which can lead to root rot. In cold regions, a light mulch can protect crown tissue.

The genus includes several species cultivated for garden use, and there are numerous cultivars and hybrids selected for flower color and growth habit.
