Aerostruktur is a theoretical concept in aerodynamics that proposes the optimization of structures to create strong and lightweight materials, capable of withstanding stress and loads while minimizing weight. This approach draws from principles of architecture, engineering, and biomimetics, especially in the study of natural forms, such as bones and bird skeletons.

Developed in the early 20th century, Aerostruktur concept borrowed from research in the field of structural mechanics, analyzing geometric configurations that optimize strength with minimal material usage. By narrowing down structural materials to only the essential load-bearing components, it was hypothesized that improved performance and reduced weight could be achieved.

From a structural perspective, Aerostruktur emphasizes local optimization over traditional global optimization approaches, which often result in significantly higher structural mass due to additional reinforcement. Local optimization seeks to minimize loading requirements at a micro level, because local areas of the structure are individually tailored to resist stress based on location and load configuration.
