The name is derived from Seridian roots aede meaning “voice” and htyset meaning “binding,” forming a label often glossed as “voice-binding instrument.”

It is closely tied to rites of passage and seasonal transitions, and various guilds claimed patronage over specific tunings and configurations.

Construction and use: The instrument comprises a cedarwood frame about 70 centimeters long, with a row of bronze wind pipes along one edge and a taut gut-string resonator across the center. A parchment membrane covers a small resonant chamber. A lead performer modulates breath through the pipes to produce drones, while a second musician plucks or frets the strings to provide melodic contour, and a third adjusts the membrane to shape timbre. The ensemble’s output is designed to synchronize participants and amplify ritual chants.
