ActuatorID

ActuatorID is a unique identifier assigned to an individual actuator within a control network or automation system. It serves as a stable reference that enables unambiguous addressing, command routing, status reporting, and diagnostic logging across devices, controllers, and supervisory software.

Typically, an ActuatorID can be structured in several ways. It may be a flat numeric code or an alphanumeric string that encodes manufacturer, device type, and serial or asset information. Some systems use hierarchical formats that reflect location or network topology, while others rely on a globally unique identifier generated during commissioning. Assignment usually occurs during device installation or asset management, and IDs are intended to remain stable even if the actuator is relocated within the system.

Usage and communication often involve ActuatorID in command and telemetry messages. Control protocols such as Modbus, CANopen, OPC UA, and MQTT-enabled systems commonly embed the ActuatorID to target specific actuators for actuation requests or to tag status and fault messages. In asset management and maintenance workflows, ActuatorIDs are linked to records in CMMS or ERP systems for tracking lifespan, calibration, and service events.

Security and governance considerations include access control to protect commands associated with an ActuatorID, audit trails of actions performed on each actuator, and measures to prevent ID spoofing or misrouting of control messages.
