Accesssystem is a term used to describe technologies, policies, and procedures that control and monitor access to physical spaces or digital resources. An access system relies on identity verification, policy-based authorization, and enforcement mechanisms to grant or deny entry or use.

Access systems can be physical, with door readers and turnstiles, or logical, governing login to computers, networks, and applications. In practice, they are often part of a broader identity and access management (IAM) framework that coordinates user provisioning, authentication, and access rights.

Core functions include authentication (confirming who a user is), authorization (what actions are allowed), provisioning and deprovisioning (life-cycle management), and auditing (logging events). Many deployments support multi-factor authentication and adaptive access policies to respond to risk signals.

Technologies used include physical credentials such as RFID badges or smart cards, biometrics, and mobile credentials; and digital credentials such as certificates and tokens. Software aspects include single sign-on, federation, and standards like OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, SAML, and WebAuthn.

Deployment considerations include architecture (centralized versus decentralized), model (on-premises, cloud, or hybrid), scalability, and privacy. Security best practices emphasize strong authentication, least privilege, access reviews, and incident response.

Applications span offices, data centers, healthcare facilities, campuses, and cloud services. Benefits include improved security and user convenience, while risks involve misconfigurations, credential theft, and potential single points of failure if not mitigated.
