Abtasten

Medical usage: In medicine, abtasten describes palpation, the manual examination of a patient by feeling with the fingers to assess organs, tenderness, size, consistency, and symmetry. Common applications include abdominal examination, breast examination, lymph node assessment, and pulse checking. Palpation can be superficial or deep and is often performed in conjunction with other examination methods such as auscultation or percussion.

Non-medical and figurative usage: Outside clinical contexts, abtasten can mean physically scanning a surface or edge by sliding the hand over it to detect features, cracks, or roughness. Figuratively, the term can describe exploring possibilities or testing ideas, as in abtasten a situation or abtasten different hypotheses to sample options.
