Sani Abacha (20 September 1943 – 8 June 1998) was a Nigerian military officer who served as the de facto head of state from November 1993 until his death in 1998 after seizing power in a coup. Born in Kano, he rose through the military ranks and led the government after overthrowing the civilian administration of Ernest Shonekan on 17 November 1993. He remained in office while Nigeria was governed by a military regime until his death.
