AaDCO2
AaDCO2 refers to the difference between arterial carbon dioxide (PaCO2) and end-tidal carbon dioxide (EtCO2). PaCO2 is the partial pressure of carbon dioxide in arterial blood, typically measured through arterial blood gas sampling. EtCO2 is the concentration of carbon dioxide at the very end of an exhaled breath, measured non-invasively using capnography. Normally, there is a small gradient between PaCO2 and EtCO2, with PaCO2 being slightly higher than EtCO2. This difference is due to the dead space in the respiratory system, which includes the conducting airways where gas exchange does not occur.
An elevated AaDCO2, meaning a larger difference between PaCO2 and EtCO2, can indicate several physiological issues.
