AV over IP refers to the transmission of audio and video signals over standard IP networks rather than traditional dedicated AV cabling. By utilizing Ethernet and IP routing, AV streams can be distributed, switched, and managed across campuses, venues, or corporate facilities, enabling scalable, flexible, and centralized control of multiple sources and displays.

Core concepts include the use of IT networking techniques and open standards. For video and audio transport, SMPTE ST 2110 is widely adopted, often paired with AES67 for interoperability of audio streams. Device discovery and control commonly rely on NMOS IS-04 and IS-05, while clock synchronization is achieved with PTP (IEEE 1588) to preserve lip sync across devices. Codecs may vary, with options such as JPEG XS for visually lossless transport and traditional codecs like H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC, or AV1.

Architecture emphasizes unicast and multicast distribution, QoS, and timing accuracy. It typically runs on enterprise-grade switches with VLANs, multicast management, port protection, and redundant paths to improve reliability in live environments. Management tools provide monitoring, configuration, and routing orchestration for large installations.

Applications include broadcast studios, live events, conference rooms, higher education campuses, and digital signage networks. Benefits include scalable bandwidth allocation, reduced copper cabling, flexible routing, easier reconfiguration, and centralized monitoring. Challenges involve network design complexity, the need for IT expertise, upfront equipment costs, and achieving true interoperability across different vendor ecosystems.
