ATPaasias

ATPaasias is a hypothetical framework in systems biology for modeling the distribution and allocation of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) within and between cells and tissues. It conceptualizes cellular energy supply as a service that can be dynamically allocated to competing processes in response to metabolic demand and environmental stress.

In this framework, biological compartments such as mitochondria, cytosol, organelles, and extracellular spaces are represented as nodes, and the transport routes that move ATP or energy equivalents are edges. Metabolic demand is treated as service requests with defined quality-of-service constraints, while energy supply comes from oxidative phosphorylation, glycolysis, and substrate-level phosphorylation. Modeling approaches mix optimization, control theory, and hybrid simulations that combine differential equations with agent-based components.

The term emerged in theoretical discussions during the late 2010s and has appeared in several reviews and modeling papers as a conceptual tool. It is not yet an established experimental framework, and researchers emphasize the need for careful validation and context-specific interpretation.

Potential applications include comparing energy strategies across cell types, guiding metabolic engineering of bioprocesses, and informing therapies that target energy metabolism in diseases such as mitochondrial disorders and cancer. Limitations include oversimplified network representations, challenges in obtaining precise kinetic data, and the risk that the service analogy obscures complex regulatory mechanisms.
