ASTM tests refer to standardized test methods developed and published by ASTM International for evaluating the properties and performance of materials, products, systems, and services. These tests provide repeatable procedures to measure mechanical, physical, chemical, and other characteristics, enabling meaningful comparisons across laboratories, suppliers, and time.

Standards are created by volunteer technical committees through a consensus process. Once approved, test methods are published as ASTM standards and are widely used in industry, research, and regulation. Although many standards are voluntary, they often become part of procurement specifications, quality programs, or regulatory requirements, making adherence important for market access and safety.

A typical ASTM standard for a test method includes a defined scope, referenced documents, significance and use, required apparatus and materials, sampling and conditioning, step-by-step procedures, calculation and interpretation of results, and reporting requirements. Some standards also specify precision and bias statements, alternatives, and safety considerations. The intent is to provide clear, repeatable instructions that yield comparable results when followed by different laboratories.

Common areas covered by ASTM tests include metals and alloys, plastics and polymers, concrete and construction materials, textiles, petroleum products, ceramics, and environmental samples, among others. Examples of widely used methods include ASTM A370 for mechanical testing of steel products, ASTM D638 for tensile properties of plastics, and ASTM C39 for compressive strength of cylindrical concrete specimens.

ASTM tests support quality control, product development, and regulatory compliance. They are widely adopted internationally and are often harmonized with or referenced by other standards organizations, contributing to global interoperability and safety in many industries.
