AROverlays

AROverlays are digital content rendered over a live view of the real world by augmented reality systems. The overlays are registered to real-world space or objects, so they appear in correct position, scale, and orientation within the user's field of view. Common overlay content includes text labels, symbols, 3D models, and interactive controls, which may persist across sessions or appear transiently as context changes.

The realization of AR overlays depends on a pipeline that combines video capture, sensor data, and computer vision. Vision-based tracking estimates the device's pose relative to the environment using techniques such as simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), marker-based tracking, or markerless feature tracking. Anchoring mechanisms attach overlays to surfaces or objects in space, with support for occlusion, lighting adaptation, and interaction. Rendering pipelines then composite the overlays into the display, ensuring consistent alignment across frames. Cross-platform frameworks such as ARKit, ARCore, and OpenXR provide APIs for implementing overlays on mobile devices and headsets.

Applications of AR overlays span many fields, including industrial maintenance, aircraft or machinery assembly, navigation and wayfinding, medical visualization, education, and entertainment. They can guide users with step-by-step instructions, convey abstract data as spatial annotations, or enable hands-free interaction in hazardous or sterile environments. Challenges include latency, drift, lighting variability, occlusion realism, privacy concerns, and energy consumption. Ongoing standardization and interoperability efforts aim to improve cross-device experience and content portability for AR overlays.
