APIeroihin

APIeroihin is a Finnish initiative that aggregates and catalogues publicly available application programming interfaces (APIs) from government and private sectors. Launched in 2019 by the Finnish Ministry of Economic Affairs and the National Institute of Information Technology, the platform aims to streamline access to digital services for developers, researchers, and businesses. The name “APIeroihin” derives from the Finnish word “eroihin,” meaning “to APIs,” reflecting its mission of guiding users toward the most relevant interfaces.

The central catalogue listed over 2,500 APIs covering domains such as transportation, health, education, finance, and environmental data. Each entry includes technical specifications, authentication methods, usage limits, and licensing information. The platform also offers a discovery tool that allows users to filter APIs by category, country, or data format, and it provides sample code in several programming languages. In addition to the catalogue, APIeroihin runs an annual API Hackathon to encourage innovative use of public data and to improve API documentation quality.

Critics have noted that while the platform provides useful metadata, the update frequency of API information can lag behind changes in service provision. Nevertheless, APIeroihin has been cited in academic studies as an example of e‑government transparency and has influenced similar cataloguing projects in other Nordic countries. As of 2024, the initiative continues to expand its coverage to include emerging services such as 5 G network APIs and IoT device management interfaces.
