AMlähetystä refers to AM broadcasting, a method of radio transmission that uses Amplitude Modulation. In AM broadcasting, the amplitude of the carrier wave is varied in accordance with the modulating signal, which carries the audio information. This modulation technique is one of the oldest and simplest forms of radio transmission.

AM waves are capable of traveling long distances, especially at night, due to reflection off the ionosphere. This characteristic made AM broadcasting ideal for early long-range communication and entertainment. However, AM signals are more susceptible to static and electrical interference than other modulation methods like FM (Frequency Modulation). The quality of sound reproduction on AM is generally considered lower than FM, with a narrower bandwidth limiting the fidelity.

AM broadcasting stations are assigned specific frequencies within the medium frequency (MF) radio band, typically ranging from 530 kHz to 1710 kHz in North America and 148.5 kHz to 2835 kHz in other parts of the world. Each station operates on a clear channel or shares channels with others, often with directional antennas to manage interference. The content broadcast on AM stations historically included news, talk shows, music, and sports. While FM broadcasting gained popularity for music due to its superior audio quality, AM remains significant for spoken-word programming and in areas where its long-range capabilities are advantageous.
