ADMXbased

ADMXbased describes policy settings and templates that are defined using ADMX files within the Windows Group Policy framework. ADMXbased templates replace the older ADM templates and are the standard for configuring Windows settings via Group Policy. ADMX templates are XML-based and separate language content into ADML files, allowing localization without altering the policy definitions.

The ADMX/ADML files describe each policy setting, including the registry keys they manage, the user or computer scope, and the user interface shown in tools such as the Group Policy Editor. Administrators deploy policy definitions by placing them in a central store (PolicyDefinitions) in SYSVOL, ensuring consistent policy catalogs across domain controllers and administrative workstations. If no central store is used, the client loads locally stored templates.

ADMXbased policy definitions are typically updated with Windows feature updates or separate template downloads. They support a broader set of features and are more scalable for multilingual environments due to separate language resource files (ADML). The policy settings are applied to user or computer configurations and enforced by the Group Policy service.

ADMXbased configurations are commonly managed with the Group Policy Management Console (GPMC) and the Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc). The central store approach is recommended in domain environments to maintain consistent policy definitions. Compatibility considerations include ensuring the ADMX/ADML versions match the Windows versions in use.
