The 6xxx series refers to a family of aluminum alloys in the 6000 series, in which magnesium and silicon are the principal alloying elements. These alloys are heat-treatable and are widely used for wrought products, especially profiles and extrusions. They offer a favorable balance of strength, corrosion resistance, formability, and weldability, making them a versatile choice for structural and architectural applications.

The key feature of 6xxx alloys is the formation of the strengthening phase Mg2Si during heat treatment, which enables precipitation hardening. They generally exhibit good mechanical properties after aging and retain good performance over a range of temperatures. The alloys also tend to have good corrosion resistance, particularly after proper finishing and treatment, and they respond well to anodizing for decorative and protective purposes. Formability is typically good in the annealed or lightly worked tempers, while higher strength is achieved through aging treatments.

Common alloys in the 6xxx series include 6061, 6063, and 6082, with other members such as 6060 and 6005 used for specific applications. 6061 is a versatile, widely used alloy for structural parts and machined components; 6063 is preferred for architectural and extrusion products due to its excellent surface finish and formability; 6082 offers higher strength for more demanding components. Typical temper designations include annealed (T0/T4) and heat-treated and aged conditions (T6).

Applications are broad and include architectural profiles, automotive components, bicycle frames, electrical enclosures, and general structural parts. The combination of light weight, strength, and good corrosion resistance makes the 6xxx series among the most commonly used aluminum alloys for extrusions and fabricated parts worldwide.
