2C-I, chemically named 2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodophenethylamine, is a synthetic psychedelic in the 2C series of phenethylamines. It was first synthesized by Alexander Shulgin and described in his book PiHKAL.

Chemistry and pharmacology: The molecule features a phenethylamine backbone with methoxy groups at the 2 and 5 positions and an iodine substituent at the 4 position. In humans, 2C-I acts as a psychedelic by agonizing the 5-HT2A receptor, with additional activity at related serotonin receptors reported.

Effects and duration: Reported effects include vivid visual alterations, enhanced tactile and emotional experiences, changes in thought and perception, and at times spiritual or philosophical reflections. Onset is typically within one to two hours, with peak effects lasting several hours and total experience often extending for six to twelve hours, depending on dose and individual factors.
