Hoarding disorder, a recognized mental health condition, is a more severe form of overstoring characterized by persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions, regardless of their actual value. This difficulty is due to a perceived need to save the items and distress associated with discarding them. The consequences of hoarding disorder can include unsanitary living conditions, fire hazards, and social isolation. Addressing overstoring, especially when it reaches the level of hoarding disorder, often requires professional intervention, including therapy and, in some cases, medication.
