"Überhitzungsschlag" is a German term that translates to "overheating stroke" or "heatstroke." It refers to a severe, life-threatening condition caused by the body's inability to regulate its temperature, leading to a dangerously high core body temperature. This typically occurs when the body is exposed to prolonged high temperatures or engages in strenuous physical activity in hot environments, overwhelming its natural cooling mechanisms like sweating.

Symptoms of überhitzungsschlag can include a high body temperature (often 104°F or higher), hot, red, dry or damp skin, a rapid, strong pulse, headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, and loss of consciousness. Unlike heat exhaustion, where the skin may be cool and clammy, in überhitzungsschlag, the skin is usually hot and dry because the body's sweating mechanism has failed.

Immediate medical attention is crucial for anyone suspected of suffering from überhitzungsschlag. While waiting for professional help, it is important to move the affected person to a cooler environment, loosen their clothing, and attempt to cool them down by applying cool, wet cloths or immersing them in cool water. It is important not to give fluids to an unconscious person. The condition can lead to serious complications affecting the brain, heart, kidneys, and muscles, and can be fatal if not treated promptly. Prevention involves staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day, wearing light-colored and loose-fitting clothing, and recognizing the early signs of heat-related illness.
