Északiközéphegység

The Északi-Középhegység, often translated as the Northern Mountains or Northern Medium Mountains, is a mountain range in northern Hungary. It stretches across the northern border of the Great Hungarian Plain and is part of the larger Carpathian Mountain system. The range is characterized by its volcanic origins, with many extinct volcanoes shaping its landscape.

Geologically, the Északi-Középhegység is diverse, featuring sedimentary rocks, andesite, and basalt formations. This geological history has led to a rich variety of landscapes, including rolling hills, steep valleys, and dramatic rock formations. The highest peak in the range is the Kékes, which is also the highest point in Hungary, reaching 774 meters (2,539 feet).

The climate in the Északi-Középhegység is generally cooler and wetter than in the surrounding lowlands, supporting a different range of flora and fauna. Forests, primarily beech and oak, cover significant portions of the mountains. The region is also known for its natural resources, including mineral springs and caves, many of which have been explored and documented.

The Északi-Középhegység is a popular destination for tourism and recreation. Hiking, cycling, and nature observation are common activities. The region is also home to several historical castles and settlements, reflecting a long human history in the area.
