These systems form an essential part of electrical grids, connecting power generation facilities to substations and ultimately to consumers. In Estonia, as in other countries, transmission lines consist of conductors, towers, insulators, and associated equipment designed to efficiently transport electricity with minimal losses.

The construction of transmission lines requires careful consideration of environmental factors, safety regulations, and technical specifications. Modern transmission lines often operate at voltages ranging from 110 kilovolts to 500 kilovolts, with some ultra-high voltage systems operating at even greater potentials. These lines typically consist of aluminum-conductor steel-reinforced (ACSR) cables suspended on tall lattice towers or poles.

Transmission lines can be categorized based on their voltage levels, function, and construction. Overhead lines are the most common, utilizing aerial cables supported by towers. Underground lines are less common due to higher costs but are sometimes used in urban areas or where overhead lines are impractical.

The maintenance and expansion of transmission networks are critical for ensuring reliable electricity supply and integrating renewable energy sources into the grid. As energy systems evolve, transmission lines continue to play a vital role in modern infrastructure.
