Øyehygiene, or eye hygiene, refers to practices that keep the eyes clean and healthy and reduce the risk of irritation and infection. It includes hand hygiene, eyelid care, safe contact lens use, and hygiene related to cosmetics and shared items.

Hands are a common source of germs. Wash hands with soap and water before touching the eyes, and avoid rubbing or touching the eyes with unclean hands. If irritation occurs, use clean hands and a clean tissue rather than rubbing.

Eyelid hygiene is important for conditions such as blepharitis or crusting around the eyelashes. Apply a warm compress for several minutes, then gently clean the eyelid margin along the lash line with a mild cleanser or diluted baby shampoo as advised by a clinician. This is typically done daily or as recommended.

Contact lens users should follow strict hygiene: wash hands before handling lenses, use only approved cleaning solutions, rub and rinse lenses if instructed, and replace lenses and cases as advised. Do not wear lenses when eyes are irritated, when sleeping unless approved, or when exposed to water sources that can contaminate lenses.

Cosmetics and sharing items can spread infections. Do not share eye makeup, and replace products that have been opened for too long (for example, mascara every few months). Remove eye makeup before bed and clean brushes and applicators regularly.

Protective practices—wear sunglasses to shield from UV light and irritants, avoid smoke and chemical fumes, and rinse eyes with clean water if they have been exposed to irritants. Seek medical advice if redness, pain, vision changes, or persistent discharge occurs, or if you wear contact lenses and symptoms worsen.
