Øyebetennelser, also known as conjunctivitis, is a common condition characterized by inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin, transparent membrane that covers the white part of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids. It can affect one or both eyes and is often referred to as "red eye" or "pink eye."

The causes of conjunctivitis are varied and can include infections, allergies, irritants, and underlying medical conditions. Infectious conjunctivitis can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or fungi. Viral conjunctivitis is highly contagious and often accompanies cold or flu symptoms. Bacterial conjunctivitis can produce thick, pus-like discharge. Allergic conjunctivitis is triggered by allergens such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander, and typically presents with itching and watery eyes. Irritant conjunctivitis can result from exposure to smoke, chlorine in swimming pools, or foreign objects in the eye.

Symptoms of conjunctivitis generally include redness in one or both eyes, itching, a gritty or sandy feeling in the eyes, increased tearing, and discharge that can be watery, white, yellow, or green. In some cases, blurred vision or sensitivity to light may also occur.

Diagnosis is usually made based on a physical examination and a review of symptoms. Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Viral conjunctivitis often resolves on its own, with cool compresses and artificial tears providing relief. Bacterial conjunctivitis is treated with antibiotic eye drops or ointments. Allergic conjunctivitis can be managed with antihistamine eye drops, oral medications, or by avoiding the allergen. Irritant conjunctivitis typically improves once the irritant is removed.

Conjunctivitis is generally not a serious condition, but prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help alleviate symptoms and prevent complications. Good hygiene practices, such as frequent hand washing and avoiding eye contact with infected individuals, are important for preventing the spread of infectious conjunctivitis.
