Örvényáramveszteség, also known as eddy current loss, is a phenomenon that occurs in conductive materials when they are subjected to a changing magnetic field. This process leads to energy dissipation in the form of heat, which is undesirable in many electrical applications.

The fundamental principle behind örvényáramveszteség lies in Faraday's law of induction. When a time-varying magnetic flux passes through a conductive material, it induces electromotive forces (EMFs) within the material. These induced EMFs, in turn, drive circulating currents, known as eddy currents. The path of these currents is within the conductive material itself.

The magnitude of these eddy currents is proportional to the rate of change of the magnetic flux and the conductivity of the material. Resistance within the material opposes the flow of these eddy currents, and this opposition causes electrical energy to be converted into thermal energy. This thermal energy is the örvényáramveszteség.

Örvényáramveszteség is a significant factor in the efficiency of electrical devices such as transformers, motors, and generators. In these applications, the core materials are often made of laminated sheets of ferromagnetic material rather than a solid block. This lamination increases the electrical resistance along the path of the eddy currents, thereby reducing their magnitude and consequently minimizing energy losses. The laminations are typically insulated from each other by a thin layer of varnish or oxide.

Other methods to mitigate örvényáramveszteség include using materials with higher electrical resistivity or reducing the frequency of the changing magnetic field, where possible. The presence of örvényáramveszteség can lead to overheating of electrical components, reduced efficiency, and a shorter lifespan for the equipment.
