An äänitysketju, or recording chain, refers to the sequence of equipment used to capture and process audio signals during the recording process. This chain typically begins with a sound source, such as a musical instrument or a voice, which is then converted into an electrical signal by a microphone. The microphone is the first link in the chain, and its quality significantly impacts the final sound.

Following the microphone, the electrical signal often passes through a preamplifier. The preamplifier boosts the weak signal from the microphone to a level that can be processed by other equipment without introducing excessive noise. After the preamplifier, the signal may go through various processors. These can include equalizers (EQs) to adjust the tonal balance, compressors to control dynamic range, and effects units like reverb or delay to add spatial characteristics or creative textures.

The processed audio signal is then typically routed to an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) if the recording is to be made digitally. The ADC transforms the analog electrical signal into digital data that can be stored and manipulated by a computer or digital audio workstation (DAW). In a digital recording environment, the DAW serves as the central hub for recording, editing, mixing, and mastering the audio.
