It is typically constructed with multiple panes of glass separated by a layer of interlayers. The key to its effectiveness lies in the combination of different glass thicknesses, the material of the interlayers, and the overall construction of the sealed unit.

The most common type of interlayer used in äänieristyslasia is a laminate, often made from polyvinyl butyral (PVB). These interlayers are designed to dampen vibrations that would otherwise pass through the glass, thereby interrupting the sound waves.
