Äänenvaimentimet, also known as suppressors or silencers, are devices that attach to the muzzle of a firearm to reduce the sound and flash produced when the weapon is discharged. Their primary function is to diminish the loud noise of a gunshot, making it less detectable. This is achieved by forcing the rapidly expanding hot gases exiting the barrel to cool and mix with ambient air within a series of baffles or chambers inside the suppressor. This process slows down the gas and reduces the pressure wave that creates the sonic boom.
While often called "silencers," the term is somewhat misleading as they do not completely silence a firearm.
