Ärsyöntä refers to an infection or inflammation of the liver or bile ducts. This condition is also known as ascending cholangitis. It occurs when there is a blockage of the bile ducts, often due to gallstones or a stricture, which allows bacteria to enter and infect the area.

Symptoms of ärsyöntä can include fever, chills, jaundice, upper right quadrant pain, and nausea. The infection can be destructive to the liver and bile ducts, leading to serious complications if left untreated. In severe cases, patients may require hospitalization and intravenous antibiotics.
