Þvagfærasjúkdóms

Þvagfærasjúkdóms is the Icelandic term for urinary tract infection (UTI). A urinary tract infection is an infection in any part of the urinary system, which includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Most infections involve the lower urinary tract, specifically the bladder and the urethra.

Women are at greater risk of developing a UTI than men. Any part of the urinary system can be affected by bacteria. Sometimes, bacteria entering the urinary tract can travel up the urinary tract to the kidneys, which can cause more serious infections. These infections are usually treated with antibiotics.

Symptoms of a UTI can include a strong, persistent urge to urinate, a burning sensation when urinating, and passing frequent, small amounts of urine. Cloudy urine, urine that appears red, bright pink or cola-colored, and strong-smelling urine are also common signs. Pelvic pain in women and rectal pain in men can also occur.

Risk factors for UTIs include sexual activity, certain types of birth control, menopause, abnormalities of the urinary tract, and a suppressed immune system. Proper hygiene, such as wiping from front to back after using the toilet, can help prevent UTIs. Drinking plenty of fluids, especially water, can help dilute urine and ensure that bacteria are flushed from the urinary tract.
