Útlokun
Útlokun is a term used in Icelandic social science to describe the processes and outcomes by which individuals or groups are prevented from participating fully in economic, political, social, and cultural life. It encompasses both the denial of opportunities and the social exclusion that accompanies stigma and discrimination. The term is used in research on inequality, welfare policy, education, housing, health, and labor markets. Causes of útlokun include structural inequality, discriminatory norms, gaps in access to services, language or cultural barriers, poverty, and vulnerable life situations such as migration, disability, or aging. It often emerges from the interaction of individual circumstances with wider institutions, policies, and social networks.
