Østrogensensitivitet, also known as estrogen sensitivity, refers to the responsiveness of tissues and cells to the hormone estrogen. The term is commonly used in medicine and research to describe how estrogen exerts its effects through estrogen receptors, primarily ERα and ERβ, located in various tissues such as the breast, uterus, bone, and brain. When cells are estrogen-sensitive, the hormone binds to its receptor, leading to changes in gene expression that influence cell proliferation, differentiation, and survival.

In clinical practice, estrogen sensitivity is a key concept in breast cancer biology. Tumors are often classified as estrogen receptor-positive (ER+), indicating that the cancer cells rely on estrogen signaling for growth. Therapies such as selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), aromatase inhibitors, or estrogen receptor downregulators are employed to block this pathway and reduce tumor proliferation.

Estrogen sensitivity also plays a role in other conditions. Osteoporosis management, for example, looks at estrogen's protective effects on bone density, whereas in endometriosis, heightened sensitivity of endometrial tissue to estrogen contributes to lesion development. Hormone replacement therapy and contraceptive use consider a woman's estrogen sensitivity profile to balance benefits against potential risks.

Research on estrogen sensitivity explores genetic variations in receptor genes and downstream signaling proteins that influence individual responses to estrogen. Genome-wide association studies identify single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with altered sensitivity, which may inform personalized treatment strategies and risk assessment for hormone-related diseases.
