Övergångsbanor, a Swedish term that translates to "transition tracks" or "transition curves," refers to specially designed track sections in railway engineering used to smoothly connect two straight sections of track that are not parallel to each other. These curves are crucial for ensuring passenger comfort, reducing wear on both the train and the track, and maintaining safe operational speeds.

The primary function of an övergångsbana is to gradually introduce lateral acceleration to a moving train. Instead of a sudden shift from a straight line to a curve of constant radius, the övergångsbana begins with a very large radius that progressively decreases until it reaches the desired radius of the main curve. This gradual change in curvature means the change in lateral force experienced by passengers is also gradual, preventing the jarring sensation of a sharp turn.

These transition curves are typically mathematically defined, with common forms including the clothoid (or Euler spiral) and the more complex cubic parabola. The choice of curve depends on factors such as the maximum allowable rate of change of acceleration, track design standards, and the specific speed requirements for the section.
