Öntöttvasból

Öntöttvasból is a form used in Hungarian to indicate material origin, meaning “from cast iron.” It is the ablative variant of the noun öntöttvas (cast iron) and is typically found in phrases describing objects made of or derived from cast iron, for example öntöttvasból készült edény or öntöttvasból készült alkatrész. In ordinary sentences it functions as a compound particle that marks the material source of the noun it accompanies.

Öntöttvas itself is a ferrous alloy with a relatively high carbon content, produced primarily by casting iron into molds. It is valued for good fluidity during pouring and for its ability to form complex shapes. There are several main types, including gray cast iron, which contains graphite flakes and offers good machinability and vibration damping, and ductile (nodular) cast iron, which has higher ductility and impact resistance. Common characteristics of öntöttvas include high compressive strength, relatively low tensile strength, and varying hardness depending on the microstructure. The material can be more brittle than many steels, and its weldability and heat treatment requirements differ accordingly.

Uses of öntöttvas are widespread in industry and everyday objects. It is frequently employed in engine blocks, cylinders and other automotive components, various machine parts, plumbing pipes and fittings, as well as cookware and heavy-duty household items. The abundance of cast iron in traditional and modern manufacturing reflects its favorable casting properties, wear resistance in certain configurations, and cost advantages.

In linguistic use, öntöttvasból serves as a productive construction to specify that something is made from cast iron or originates from it. It commonly appears alongside verbs like készült (made) or származik (originates).
