Élességnövelés refers to the process of enhancing the sharpness or clarity of an image. This is a common technique in image processing and photography, used to make fine details more distinct and to improve the overall visual quality of a picture. The term itself is Hungarian, directly translating to "sharpness increase."

The primary goal of élességnövelés is to make edges and textures appear more defined. This can be achieved through various algorithms that analyze the image and selectively increase contrast along edges. Common methods include unsharp masking, which works by blurring a copy of the image and then subtracting this blurred version from the original, thereby accentuating the differences around edges. Other techniques involve spatial filtering, where specific kernels are applied to the image pixels to achieve the desired sharpening effect.

While beneficial, élességnövelés must be applied judiciously. Over-sharpening can introduce undesirable artifacts, such as halos around objects or increased noise, which can degrade the image quality rather than improve it.
