Återupplevande is a Swedish term that translates to "reliving" or "re-experiencing" in English. It refers to the psychological process of recalling and re-engaging with past events, emotions, and sensations as if they were happening in the present moment. This phenomenon can occur spontaneously or be intentionally induced through various means.

Spontaneous återupplivande can be triggered by sensory input, such as a familiar smell, a piece of music, or a specific location, which can evoke vivid memories and the associated emotional states. It is also a common feature of certain psychological conditions, notably post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), where individuals may experience intrusive flashbacks or nightmares that feel like a direct re-experiencing of traumatic events.

Intentional återupplivande can be sought through practices like reminiscence therapy, particularly used with the elderly to improve mood and cognitive function, or in therapeutic settings to process difficult memories. Techniques such as guided imagery or journaling can also facilitate this process. While it can offer opportunities for emotional processing and insight, the intensity of återupplivande can sometimes be overwhelming, especially when related to distressing experiences.
