Återmatningen is a term originating from Swedish that translates to "feedback" or "return feed." In a general sense, it refers to the process where the output of a system is routed back as input, influencing the system's subsequent behavior. This concept is fundamental across various disciplines, including engineering, cybernetics, biology, and economics.

In engineering, feedback loops are crucial for controlling and stabilizing systems. For instance, in a thermostat, the measured room temperature (output) is fed back to the control unit, which then adjusts the heating or cooling system (input) to maintain a desired temperature. Positive feedback amplifies a signal, leading to rapid changes, while negative feedback dampens signals and promotes stability.
