Állampolgárságra, or citizenship, refers to the legal status of an individual belonging to a particular sovereign state. It denotes a relationship between a person and a country, granting the individual certain rights and responsibilities while also obligating them to the state. The acquisition of citizenship can occur through various means, most commonly by birth (jus soli or jus sanguinis) or through naturalization.

Jus soli, or the right of soil, grants citizenship to individuals born within the territorial boundaries of a country, regardless of their parents' nationality. Conversely, jus sanguinis, or the right of blood, confers citizenship based on the nationality of one's parents. Naturalization is a legal process by which a foreign national can acquire citizenship after meeting specific requirements, which often include residency, language proficiency, good character, and an oath of allegiance.

Citizenship carries significant implications. It typically entitles individuals to vote, hold public office, access social services, and receive diplomatic protection abroad. In return, citizens are generally expected to obey the laws of their country, pay taxes, and, in some cases, perform military service. The concept of dual citizenship, where an individual holds citizenship in more than one country simultaneously, is recognized by many states but not all. Denying or revoking citizenship is usually a complex legal process, often reserved for serious offenses or fraudulent acquisition. The specific laws and regulations governing citizenship vary considerably from one nation to another.
