zori

Zori are traditional Japanese sandals characterized by a flat sole and a thong-style upper that passes between the big toe and the second toe. They are commonly worn with kimono or yukata, and also serve as casual summer footwear in modern Japan.

Traditional zori come in several materials. Warazori, or straw zori, are made from rice straw or other plant fibers and often feature a woven or braided sole with fabric or leather straps. Tatami zori have a sole wrapped in a tatami-like weave and are valued for their formal appearance when paired with kimono. The thong strap, known as hanao, is typically anchored at two points near the sides of the sole, and can be made from fabric, hemp, or leather. Some versions are designed to be worn with tabi socks.

In addition to traditional forms, modern zori are produced from leather, rubber, EVA foam, and other synthetic materials. They remain popular for summer wear, festivals, and ceremonial occasions, and many studios create zori to match specific kimono styles or accessories. There are also casual adaptations designed for comfort and everyday use.

Zori are distinct from geta, another traditional Japanese sandal. Geta have elevated wooden soles with teeth that lift the foot, while zori have a flat sole and a thong that secures the foot more closely to the surface. Today’s zori reflect a blend of historical styles and contemporary fashion, spanning formal attire to casual, everyday wear.
