Zasiedlenie, commonly discussed in Polish historiography as zasiedlanie, is the process of populating a geographic area by establishing new settlements and permanent communities. The plural form zasiedleniach appears in texts referring to various episodes or aspects of this process, as well as to the act itself in different times and places. It encompasses both voluntary migration and organized colonization, including state-led settlement policies, religious or military colonization, and later internal relocations.

Historically, zasiedlenie has been used to describe movements into frontier lands and changes in demographic and linguistic composition. In Central Europe, parallel processes are often linked to the broader phenomenon of eastward settlement (Ostsiedlung), though the Polish historiographical usage tends to focus on local and regional examples of settlement by new populations, peasants, merchants, or soldiers, and the creation of new villages or towns.

Mechanisms of zasiedlenie typically involved land grants or incentives, the organization and financing of infrastructure, and the legal recognition of settlers’ rights. Settlements were commonly planned around agricultural or defensive needs and gradually integrated into existing economic networks, governance structures, and religious institutions. Over time, they contributed to demographic shifts, cultural exchanges, and the transformation of landscapes.

In contemporary contexts, the term may apply to planned resettlements, migration-driven population changes, or policy-driven rural development. The concept remains a key part of discussions on demographic history, territorial development, and the long-term dynamics of settlement and land use.
