Zadelmakers are craftsmen who design, construct, and repair saddles and related leather equipment for horses. The term is used in Dutch-speaking regions, and the role covers a range of riding disciplines, including English and dressage saddles, jumping saddles, Western saddles, as well as bridles, girths, saddle pads, and other tack. Zadelmakers may create custom pieces or refurbish and adjust existing saddles to fit horse and rider.

Core skills include pattern making, leather selection and cutting, and assembling a saddle with attention to fit and balance. The internal framework, known as the saddle tree, determines shape and weight distribution; craftsmen cover the tree with leather and padding, sew panels, and attach flaps and pommels. They use tools such as skiving knives, awls, stitching punches, pliers, and presses. Quality depends on precise stitching, durable leather, and proper conditioning. Repairs may involve re-stitching seams, replacing worn billets, or re-shaping a tree.

Training traditionally occurs through apprenticeships, often within workshops or guilds; today many zadelmakers are independent artisans or work for equestrian manufacturers and shops. The profession sits at the intersection of saddlery and leather crafts, requiring knowledge of horse conformation and rider needs, as well as craftsmanship in leatherworking.
