Yttriastabilizált refers to a material that has been stabilized by the addition of yttria (yttrium oxide, Y₂O₃). This stabilization is commonly employed in various ceramic materials, most notably in zirconia (zirconium dioxide, ZrO₂). Pure zirconia undergoes a phase transformation when heated and cooled, leading to significant volume changes and cracking. The addition of yttria disrupts this natural transformation, forming a metastable tetragonal phase at room temperature, which is much more resistant to cracking. This yttriastabilized zirconia, often abbreviated as YSZ, exhibits enhanced mechanical properties such as high strength, toughness, and fracture resistance.
YSZ finds widespread applications in demanding environments. It is extensively used in dental restorations due to
