YtterbiumII refers to the ytterbium(II) ion, Yb2+. Ytterbium is a chemical element with the symbol Yb and atomic number 70. It is a member of the lanthanide series. Ytterbium commonly exists in the +3 oxidation state, forming Yb3+ ions. However, under certain conditions, it can also form the Yb2+ ion.

The ytterbium(II) ion is a powerful reducing agent. This is due to the electronic configuration of ytterbium, which favors the more stable +3 oxidation state. The Yb2+ ion has a [Xe] 4f14 electron configuration, meaning its outermost f subshell is completely filled. This filled subshell provides significant stability, making it energetically favorable for Yb2+ to lose an additional electron to become Yb3+ ([Xe] 4f13). This ease of oxidation means Yb2+ readily donates electrons to other species, acting as a reductant.

Ytterbium(II) compounds are relatively rare compared to their Yb(III) counterparts. Examples include ytterbium(II) chloride (YbCl2) and ytterbium(II) oxide (YbO). These compounds are often unstable in the presence of air or moisture, readily oxidizing to the Yb(III) state. Due to its strong reducing properties, Ytterbium(II) has found limited applications, primarily in research settings where controlled reducing conditions are required. It is also of interest in studies of lanthanide chemistry and redox reactions.
