Yhteiskuntaoppi is the Finnish term for the school subject commonly translated as civics or social studies. In the Finnish education system, yhteiskuntaoppi introduces students to how society is organized and governed, and to the rights and responsibilities of citizens.

The curriculum covers the Finnish political system (parliament, government, municipalities), basic constitutional principles, legal processes, and public administration; it also examines economy, taxation, welfare state, consumer rights, and the role of media and information in democracy. In addition, it addresses ethical questions, human rights, globalization, and sustainable development, aiming to foster critical thinking and informed participation in public discourse.

Instruction typically uses an interdisciplinary approach, linking to history, geography, economics, and language studies. Teaching methods emphasize discussion, inquiry, problem-based projects, simulations (such as mock elections or parliamentary debates), and analysis of current events. Assessment combines tests, essays, portfolios, and project work, with emphasis on evidence-based argumentation and the ability to articulate informed opinions. In Finnish core curricula, yhteiskuntaoppi is a core subject within basic education, with local curricula shaping specific content and pacing. Its goals include enabling students to understand the functioning of society, participate in democratic processes, and navigate information critically.
