Yemekhane is a Turkish term meaning a dining hall or canteen. It is commonly found in institutions such as schools, universities, workplaces, military facilities, hospitals, and prisons. The word yemekhane is formed from yemek (meal, to eat) and hane (house, room). The form yemekhaneyi is the accusative case, used when the dining hall is the direct object of a sentence, as in Yemekhaneyi temizlediler (They cleaned the dining hall).

In institutional settings, a yemekhane is typically a communal space where meals are prepared or distributed for a large group. It may operate as a self-service cafeteria or a served-meal facility, with standardized menus, fixed prices, and scheduled serving times. The layout often includes a serving area, tables or benches for seating, and seating arrangements designed to accommodate many people at once. Some yemekhaneler offer meal plans or subsidies for students, employees, or soldiers.

Turkish usage distinguishes yemekhane from other eating-out terms. Kantin or kafeterya are borrowed terms often used for commercial, off-campus, or more informal eating spaces, while lokanta denotes a traditional restaurant. In practice, a yemekhane is typically an internal dining space within an organization, whereas lokantas and kafeteryas are separate public venues.

Historically, yemekhane has been a common feature of large institutions in Turkey and the former Ottoman Empire, reflecting a focus on centralized provisioning of meals. Today, the concept remains widespread, though modern facilities may emphasize efficiency, hygiene, and nutritional standards in addition to social and cultural aspects of communal dining.
