wp-admin is the administrative backend of WordPress, a content management system. It is part of WordPress core and provides the interface for managing content, themes, plugins, users, and site settings. The word "wpadmin" is sometimes used informally to refer to the backend, but the official path is /wp-admin.

Access to wp-admin requires authentication. WordPress uses a capability-based role system with roles such as Administrator, Editor, Author, Contributor, and Subscriber. Administrators have full control over the site; Editors can manage content, while other roles have more limited permissions. Users gain access to the admin panel through their user accounts.

Within the dashboard, administrators can manage posts, pages, media, comments, and users, as well as install or configure themes and plugins. The Appearance, Plugins, Users, Tools, and Settings menus organize options. The Screen Options and Help panels allow interface customization. The Customizer provides real-time theme adjustments for some settings.

Security considerations include keeping WordPress core, themes, and plugins up to date, using strong passwords, and enabling HTTPS. Administrators can harden wp-admin by disabling file editing, limiting login attempts, enabling two-factor authentication, and restricting access by IP address. For multisite installations, the network admin area is at a related path (often /wp-admin/network/), with separate controls for site-wide settings.

wp-admin controls are central to site management but are separate from the public-facing site. Proper use and security practices help maintain data integrity and site availability. The term wpadmin is commonly used in documentation or discussions as shorthand, but the canonical URL segment is wp-admin.
