Windwatching is the practice of observing, recording, and interpreting wind conditions in a specific locality to understand weather patterns, plan outdoor activities, or study microclimates. It combines subjective observations with quantitative data from instruments and official forecasts.

Historically, windwatching developed within amateur meteorology and maritime communities, where knowledge of wind direction and speed was essential for navigation and safety. With modern meteorology networks and digital sensors, windwatching has become more informal, often supplemented by data from weather apps and personal weather stations.

Practices include qualitative methods such as assessing wind strength using the Beaufort scale from visual cues (flags, smoke, waves) and noting direction, gusts, and stability. Quantitative methods use portable anemometers, handheld wind meters, wind vanes, or mobile weather stations. Researchers and hobbyists may also use wind roses and microclimate maps to summarize patterns over time. Data can be recorded in logs or shared on community platforms to contribute to local weather understanding.

Applications include planning sailing, kitesurfing, paragliding or hiking; evaluating wind energy resources; ecological studies on pollen and seed dispersal; and validating forecast models at a local scale.
