Windhonden, also known as sighthounds, are a distinctive group of dog breeds characterized by their lean build, deep chest, and long, narrow head. Their physical attributes are specifically adapted for high-speed pursuit of prey, relying on keen eyesight and incredible speed rather than scent. The name "windhond" itself is a Dutch term meaning "wind dog," directly referencing their swiftness.

Historically, windhonden were developed for hunting and coursing, where they would spot game from a distance and chase it down with remarkable agility. Breeds like the Greyhound, Whippet, and Saluki fall under this category, each with unique origins and subtle differences but sharing the core sighthound traits. Their eyes are positioned to provide a wide field of vision, allowing them to detect movement quickly.

Despite their athletic heritage, many windhonden are known for their surprisingly placid and gentle temperaments as companions. They often enjoy long naps and can be quite affectionate with their families. However, their strong prey drive means they need secure environments and careful management around smaller animals.
